Biography

Professor Rajarshi (Raj) Bhattacharya is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based at Cleveland Clinic Hospital, London (private) and St. Mary's and Charing Cross Hospitals, London (NHS). He is Professor of Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, Ohio, US and Divisional Director of Surgery at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and North-West London Major Trauma Centre, London, UK. He is Immediate Past President of Orthopaedic Section of Royal Society of Medicine, London and holds several senior posts within NHS and outside. His main areas of interest include all aspects of knee surgery including acute injuries.

Raj Bhattacharya started off his initial medical career in Lanarkshire, Scotland following which he moved to the North-East of England to complete his Basic Surgical Training. Here he completed a Masters degree in Evidence Based Orthopaedic Studies and underwent higher surgical training as a Specialist Registrar (Calman Training Scheme) in Trauma and Orthopaedics within the Northern Deanery, based at Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Subsequently, he trained as a specialist knee surgeon and undertook two prestigious Knee Fellowships, first at the Edinburgh Knee Unit and then at the Southampton Knee Unit. He also trained as a Trauma Specialist with a Fellowship at the world-renowned Edinburgh Trauma Unit and was appointed as a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in London in 2010. He was Head of Department of Orthopaedics from 2012 and subsequently became Divisional Director of Surgery at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in 2016. He was conferred Fellowship of the Austrian, Swiss and German Orthopaedic Associations and was more recently appointed as Professor of Surgery at Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, Ohio US.

Prof Bhattacharya consults on a wide range of orthopaedic conditions. His areas of expertise include all aspects of knee surgery including partial and total knee joint replacements, minimally invasive surgery and soft tissue and ligament reconstructions of the knee, as well as acute orthopaedic injuries and complex trauma. He also has active research interests in these areas and has published in several peer-reviewed journals and presented his work at various national and international forums. He has been involved in orthopaedic teaching and training initially at Newcastle University and subsequently at University of Edinburgh and currently continues to do so at the Imperial College Medical School and North-West London Orthosurgeon Training Program. He regularly lectures as faculty at specialist orthopaedic courses around the world.
