Post-Surgery Information

Following the surgery, you will initially be taken to the recovery unit and then transferred back to the ward once you have recovered and are comfortable. If your surgery is performed as a day-case procedure, you will usually be reviewed by a physiotherapist before your discharge and given clear instructions on your post-operative rehabilitation. You will also be provided with splints, crutches or other walking aids that you may require as well as pain medication as necessary.

After discharge from hospital, you will usually require removal of stitches between 12-14 days following surgery. This can be organised through your GP or district nurse or via a follow up appointment with your specialist. You may also require outpatient physiotherapy and rehabilitation as well as further outpatient follow up with your consultant and you will be given instructions regarding these as appropriate.

We actively encourage patients to ask questions at every stage of their treatment and if you are unsure of anything related to your treatment, please do not hesitate to ask Professor Bhattacharya or one of his colleagues looking after you, who will be more than happy to clarify your doubts or refer your question to the appropriate person.
